Single Quarters, Windhoek | During Apartheid
The Single Quarters in Katutura were originally built during apartheid as part of a system of racial segregation and labor control. Designed to house black male contract workers who came to Windhoek for employment, these dormitory-style accommodations were intentionally built to separate families, restrict movement, and enforce the pass system.
Today, while the buildings remain, the area has transformed. The Single Quarters are now best known for their vibrant open-air market—especially the famous Kapana stands where locals gather to enjoy freshly grilled meat. It’s a living symbol of resilience, where a painful past has evolved into a place of community, culture, and flavor.
